If you prefer to stay at your own home, our team can provide respite services while your regular carer takes a break or be there alongside your regular carer while we do the heavy lifting.

  • In-Home Respite or Flexible Respite: Supports for a short period of time as a once off or reoccurring. This could be for a few hours a week in your home or you may prefer that we take you out and about in the community. If you would like to stay home, we can assist with daily tasks such as personal care, household tasks, cleaning, cooking and more.
  • Overnight Respite: You can access overnight supports for every hour of the night (also known as Active Sleepovers) or request a support worker to be present during the night where they can sleep in a separate room but can be woken up to provide support when you need  (also known as Inactive Sleepover)

If you prefer to stay away from home, we can organise a comfortable and fully accessible accommodation or a stay at an aged care facility (depending on your circumstances). The different types of respite services include:

  • Day Respite: Designed to give caregivers a break for the entire day where you spend the whole day at aged care facility. In the facility, food and activities are organised.
  • Short Term Accommodation (STA): Available to eligible participants of the NDIS where they can stay away from their home for up to 28 days. During their stay, activities, food, transportation and supports are organised 24/7.
  • Overnight Respite: Similar to day respites, except you stay overnight in an aged care facility with nighttime assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Respite care is a planned short-term break designed to support both the caregiver and those receiving care. It can range from a few hours to several weeks. Respite care is a suitable arrangement for those caring for individuals who are ill, disabled, or elderly. The flexibility of the arrangement can provide the much-needed relief to both parties.

Respite services can happen in various settings:

  • A support worker from an organisation visits you at your home to provide care.
  • You attend a day program or activity centre for a day or overnight.
  • You stay at a respite care facility, such as a nursing home or an accommodation in your preferred area for a few days to a few weeks.

Short term respite care can be for a few hours each week.

Longer-term respite can be for an extended period, including overnight stays. This allows the caregiver to take a longer time away or attend to other responsibilities.

If you are eligible for the Australian Government aged care funding schemes, you may be eligible for 63 days of subsidised respite care per financial year. This can be extended up to 21 days with approval from an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT)

If you are eligible for the funding from Australia’s NDIS  Scheme, you may be eligible for up to 28 days of subsidised short term accommodation stays annually. In this arrangement, you can stay at an accommodation away from your home with supports, activities, transportation and food all provided.

If you suddenly need a break due to illness, injury, or another emergency, call Carer Gateway at 1800 422 737. They can help you find and book emergency respite care services. It’s wise to create an emergency care plan in advance, outlining who can take over caregiving responsibilities in an emergency.

The Australian government does offer means-tested financial assistance for eligible elderly individuals and their carers. This assistance can be used for in-home care, respite care services, nursing support and a range of other services. However, families may still need to contribute to the cost of care, depending on their financial situation and the specific service chosen. For more information on this, we recommended visiting My Aged Care.

Community access respite allows individuals, especially those with disabilities or special needs, to participate in social activities and outings. This could involve going to the cinema, attending sporting events, or other activities tailored to their interests. It’s a great way to meet new people, learn new skills, and experience different environments, all while receiving support from trained staff.

Yes, respite care is highly beneficial for both people with dementia and their caregivers. For the person with dementia, it offers social interaction, cognitive stimulation, and a change of environment. For the caregiver, it provides a crucial break to rest, recharge, and reduce stress. Respite care can also be a helpful way to assess whether a more permanent care arrangement might be suitable.

Consider respite care if you or your loved one:

  • Need a break from caregiving: Respite services can give caregivers a well-deserved rest and prevent burnout.
  • Want peace of mind while on vacation: Respite offers professional care for loved ones while caregivers are away.
  • Need extra support after a hospital stay: Respite care can help with recovery and transitioning back home.
  • Are recuperating from an injury or illness: Respite care at home can provide assistance and aid in recovery.

Respite care can provide temporary relief and support in various situations, offering flexibility and peace of mind for both caregivers and their loved ones.
