EnableU NDIS Short Term Accommodation

Fully-accessible STA homes and NDIS respite services delivered by a Registered NDIS provider

What is NDIS Respite Care?

NDIS respite care, also known as Short Term Accommodation, provides NDIS participants with funded support and accommodation for short stays away from home. It’s designed to offer a break for carers and participants, giving both a chance to rest and recharge.

NDIS Respite Services At Your Home

If you prefer to stay in the comfort of your home, our support workers will come to you to provide supports. This is also known as in-home respite.

You can access in-home respite services as a one off or for as frequent as you need.

A benefit of staying in you own home means that funding from your NDIS plan will go towards more support hours as opposed to paying for an accommodation.

Not all participants have eligible funding in their plan for an accommodation, this means that for some participants, in-home respite is their only available option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short Term Accommodation (STA) or respite care, is subsidised services from the NDIS to cover the cost of temporary accommodation and or care for participants for a short time away from their usual home. STA is often funded when a participant’s regular carers need a break or are unavailable, or to allow the participant to try new things, develop skills, and have a change of scenery.

The NDIS considers short term accommodation, including NDIS respite care for carers, an essential support for both you and your carers. It can help prevent carer burnout, promote your independence, and ensure your well-being. The NDIS will assess your individual circumstances and needs to determine if STA is appropriate for you.

Yes, you have the right to choose your STA provider based on your preferences and needs.

Your child may already have STA in their NDIS plan which you are not aware about. Talk to your support coordinator or talk to the NDIA to check if funding for STA is included. If they do not have STA in their plan, talk to your support coordinator about eligibility.

NDIS respite holidays refer to short-term accommodation funded by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Australia. These are designed to provide temporary relief and support for both people with disabilities and their carers, offering a change of scenery and a break from daily routines.

However, the term “NDIS respite holidays” can be misleading. The primary purpose of NDIS-funded respite is to give carers a break and ensure that participants receive appropriate care during this period. While some participants might view their respite stay as a holiday, this is not the primary intention of the service. The focus is on providing necessary support and care, rather than offering a vacation experience.

It’s important to understand that “respite holidays” are not officially recognised by the NDIS as a service or term. Using this term can create unrealistic expectations about the level of care and the type of experience provided. The main goal of NDIS respite is to ensure both participants and their carers have a supportive and restorative experience, not necessarily a holiday-like atmosphere.

You might not need specific funding for STA or respite in your plan in order to access Short Term Accommodation or respite care services. You might be able to use flexible funding in your core budget. If your needs change, you can request a plan review to include STA funding and you can do this by liaising with your support coordinator during your plan review.

Short Term Accommodation (STA) is not typically used for housing crises. It’s specifically designed to provide temporary support and accommodation related to your disability, such as giving your usual carers a break or helping you build skills in a new environment. If you’re facing a housing crisis or need emergency accommodation, it’s important to seek help from other government departments. For example, you can refer to emergency accommodation supports available if you are in NSW.

When choosing among NDIS respite providers, here are some factors to keep in mind:

  • Make sure the provider is registered with the NDIS and has a good reputation. Registered NDIS short term accommodation providers are vetted by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.
  • Think about what kind of care you or your loved one needs – whether it’s in-home support, a short break away, or something else. Find a provider who specialises in the services you need.
  • Look for NDIS respite providers who have experience supporting people with similar challenges. They’ll know how to best meet your loved one’s needs.
  • Choose a provider with accommodation that matches your preferences.
  • A good NDIS respite care provider will keep you in the loop with regular updates. You should feel comfortable asking questions and raising concerns.
  • Understand the costs involved and compare different providers. Remember, the cheapest option isn’t always the best.
