Support at Home, Explained Simply

Everything you need to know before getting started

Your Support at Home eligibility is determined through an aged care assessment.

You may be eligible for an assessment if you have care needs and are:

  • 65 years or older
  • 50 years or older and Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • 50 years or older and homeless or at risk of homelessness, or
already accessing aged care under certain existing arrangements.

Your assessment looks at more than your age. The assessor will talk with you about areas such as mobility, personal care, household tasks, health, memory, recent falls or hospital admissions and changes in the help available from family or carers.

The assessment determines whether you’re eligible for Support at Home, which services you’re approved for and the level of ongoing or short-term funding you may receive.

How Does a Support at Home Package Work?

Your aged care assessment determines which Support at Home funding classification applies to you. Each classification provides a different level of government funding, allowing your services to be tailored to your assessed needs.

How Much Does Support at Home Cost?

Support at Home services are divided into three broad categories:

  • Clinical Supports include health-related services such as nursing and allied health.
  • Independence services help you manage day-to-day activities and remain connected, and include supports such as transport, respite and social support.
  • Everyday Living services provide practical assistance around your home, including cleaning, gardening and meal preparation.

Your aged care assessment determines which services you’re approved to access. You and your Support at Home care provider can then decide how to use those approved services within your available funding.

That means your care doesn’t need to look like anybody else’s. One person may need regular personal care and physiotherapy, while another may rely more heavily on cleaning, transport and nursing.

How Much Does Support at Home Cost?

The Australian Government subsidises your approved services, but you may need to contribute towards some services. Your contribution depends on your income and assets and the category of service you receive.

There is no participant contribution for Clinical Supports. Independence and Everyday Living services can require a contribution based on your assessed financial circumstances. Providers also set their own service prices. This means two Support at Home providers may charge different amounts for the same type of service.

That’s why it’s important to look at both service rates and participant contributions when comparing providers. A lower service price may allow your quarterly funding to support more hours of care. We aim to provide competitive, transparent pricing so you can understand what is being charged before your services begin.

Changing or Choosing a Support at Home Provider For The First Time

If your current provider isn’t meeting your needs, you can change.

You may want to move because services aren’t available when you need them, communication is poor, prices aren’t right for you or another provider simply feels like a better fit.

You can change Support at Home providers at any time, and your existing provider must assist with the transition. There is no exit fee simply for changing providers.

Self-Manage Your Support at Home Services

You don’t necessarily need your provider to organise every part of your day-to-day services. You can self-manage only the services you want to.

EnableU offers Support at Home self management for participants and families who want more control over choosing workers, arranging schedules or using their own approved suppliers.

You can arrange and negotiate directly with your workers, while EnableU continues to manage the provider responsibilities around your Support at Home funding.

This means your budget oversight,  clinical needs, payments to the workers and verification of your workers remain supported by EnableU.

Frequently Asked Questions

Support at Home is the Australian Government’s in-home aged care program for eligible older Australians who need assistance to continue living safely and independently at home.

It replaced the Home Care Packages Program and Short-Term Restorative Care Programme on 1 November 2025.

Depending on your assessment, Support at Home aged care can include ongoing services, Assistive Technology and Home Modifications, restorative care or end-of-life support.

Support at Home replaced the Home Care Packages Program in November 2025. Both of them are the exact same program – government-funded care to help older Australians remain at home.

Support at Home eligibility is based on both your age and your assessed care needs.

Generally, you need to be aged 65 years or older, or 50 years or older if you’re Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander or homeless or at risk of homelessness, and have care needs identified through an aged care assessment.

You don’t need to wait until you’re unable to manage at home. Changes in mobility, memory, health, family support, falls or difficulty with everyday activities can all be reasons to seek an assessment.

Your package can be spend on  services from the Support at Home service list.

Depending on your assessment and approval, this may include nursing, allied health, personal care, respite, transport, social support, cleaning, gardening, shopping and meal preparation.

Separate funding may also be approved for Assistive Technology and Home Modifications or short-term care pathways.

Your support plan identifies which services you’re approved to access, rather than giving every participant the same list of services.

Unfortunately if a service is not on your approval plan, you are unable to access that service. The only way to access unapproved services is to go through another reassessment with My Aged Care.

Your Support at Home package provider (such as EnableU) does more than send workers to your home.

We will

  • Works with you to develop your care plan and individualised budget
  • Coordinate your approved services
  • Monitor your needs (especially clinical needs)
  • Provides care management
  • Manages claims (which means paying your workers and claiming this back from the government)
  • Collect participant contributions from you and give you monthly statements showing services and remaining funding.

You may need to contribute towards some services, but not every type of Support at Home service has the same contribution.

Clinical Supports such as nursing and physiotherapy are fully funded by the Australian Government, while some Independence and Everyday Living services can incur a participant contribution based on your financial circumstances.

Your contribution is calculated against the price of the service you actually receive and your personal circumstances such as your pension status.

Learn more about your contributions here.

Some participants waiting for their full ongoing funding allocation may receive interim funding so critical services can begin sooner.

Interim funding is currently 60% of the participant’s total funding classification. When the remaining funding becomes available, the participant moves to their full budget; the difference is not backdated.

Your provider can help prioritise your approved services while you’re receiving the interim amount.
