Getting Started With Support at Home Services

Whether you’re applying for aged care funding for the first time, choosing a new provider or thinking about changing providers, it helps to know your options. We can guide you through the process and help you organise the right Support at Home services for your needs. Learn how we continue to provide support for our clients, the Kumar family.

Meet Our Team With a Free, No-Obligation Meet & Greet

Choosing the right Support at Home provider is an important decision for you and your family. You want to understand not just what services are available, but who will provide your care, what it will cost, how responsive the team is and what happens when your needs change.

EnableU offers a free, no-obligation meet and greet where we can learn about you, your goals and the support you have been approved for. We’ll also explain our Support at Home services, pricing and how we would manage your care, so you can decide whether we’re the right fit before committing.

Switching Support at Home Providers Is Easier Than You Might Think

If your current provider is no longer meeting your needs, you’re not locked in. You can choose another provider at any time. Your existing provider cannot charge you a fee simply for leaving.

EnableU can help you through the transition by:

Register With My Aged Care and Complete Your Aged Care Assessment

If you haven’t been approved for Support at Home services yet, the first step is to register with My Aged Care. You can apply online or contact My Aged Care by phone.

Once your funding is approved and  allocated, you can choose a registered Support at Home provider, such as EnableU, enter into a service agreement and begin organising your approved services.

There can be a wait between approval and receiving your full funding depending on your circumstances. If you’re unsure where you are in the process, our team can help you understand what your My Aged Care documents mean and what your next step should be.

Privately Fund Your Home Care Services While You Wait

Unfortunately we have seen some families waiting for as long as 1-2 years for their Support at Home funding to be approved and allocated. Sometimes you need support before your government funding is ready.

If you’re waiting for a My Aged Care assessment, waiting for Support at Home funding to be allocated, or simply need more assistance than your current government-funded budget can provide, you can choose to privately fund your home care services.

Make Your Home Safer

Home modifications under Support at Home are designed to make your home safer, easier to access and better suited to your changing needs. This can include modifications such as handrails, ramps, accessible bathroom changes, stair lifts or widening doorways for wheelchair access.

Importantly, home modifications funding is separate from your regular Support at Home quarterly budget. You don’t need to save up your ongoing care funding to pay for approved modifications. If your aged care assessment identifies a need, you may be approved for a separate Home Modifications funding tier based on the type and complexity of work required.

If you are already on Support at Home without HM funding, as your provider, we can apply for this funding for you.

If approved, you could be funded one of the following tiers

  • Low – Under $500
  • Medium – Up to $2,000
  • High – Up to $15,000

The aim of home modification services isn’t to renovate your home generally. It’s to make practical changes that help you move around more safely and continue living at home with greater confidence.

The Right Equipment at Home

Support at Home assistive technology includes equipment and products that make everyday activities safer or easier when age-related changes make them more difficult to manage.

Depending on your assessed needs, aged care assistive technology may include walking frames, wheelchairs, shower chairs, commodes, non-slip equipment, personal emergency alarms and other approved assistive devices for elderly people living at home.

Like home modifications, assistive technology funding is separate from your regular Support at Home quarterly budget.

If approved, you could be funded one of the following tiers

  • Low – Under $500
  • Medium – Up to $2,000
  • High – Up to $15,000

Some assistive technology for seniors can be purchased relatively simply, while more complex equipment may require assessment, prescription, trials or fitting by an appropriate health professional.

EnableU helps you liaise, coordinate and purchase these items through these assistive technology providers such as Aida Care or Independent Living Specialists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your approved services will be listed in your My Aged Care support plan or it might be called your Notice of Decision. This is usually emailed or posted to you when you get approved for your funding.

Your plan reflects your assessed care needs and identifies the Support at Home service types you’re able to access with your funding.

When you join EnableU, we’ll review your support plan with you and explain what you’ve been approved for, what each service can be used for and how we can build those services into your care plan and available budget.

Yes. Being approved for a service doesn’t mean you have to receive it in exactly the same way or at the same frequency forever.

You and your Care Partner from EnableU will work together to decide which of your approved services you want to use and how they fit what you need.

For example, you might prioritise personal care several times a week while arranging cleaning less frequently. Your service mix can be adjusted as your preferences and needs change, provided the services remain consistent with your assessed needs and Support at Home requirements.

Your list of approved services aren’t meant to stay fixed if your circumstances change.

If you’re finding everyday tasks harder, your mobility has declined, you’ve returned home from hospital or there has been another significant change in your health, speak with your Care Partner.

We will review your care plan and existing services with you. If your current approvals or funding are no longer enough to meet your needs, we can apply for a reassessment through My Aged Care where your classification may change increase to a higher level. If approved, this means you will receive additional funding for services.

You may need to contribute towards some services, but not every type of Support at Home service has the same contribution.

Clinical Supports such as nursing and physiotherapy are fully funded by the Australian Government, while some Independence and Everyday Living services can incur a participant contribution based on your financial circumstances.

Your contribution is calculated against the price of the service you actually receive and your personal circumstances such as your pension status.

Learn more about your contributions here.

The amount of funding you receive depends on your assessed care needs.

People assessed under Support at Home can be assigned 1 of 8 ongoing funding classifications, with Classification 1 providing around $11,000~ per year and Classification 8 providing the highest of around $80,000~ per year

If you previously had a Home Care Package and transitioned to Support at Home, you may instead have one of four Transitioned HCP funding levels. These correspond with the previous Home Care Package Levels 1–4.

Learn more about the exact funding you will receive for each classification or level.

Yes. We offer Support at Home self management for participants and families who want greater choice and control over their services.

You can choose to self-manage some or most of the day-to-day organisation of your care. For example, you might use an EnableU support worker while arranging your own gardener, cleaner or another approved third-party service provider.

You don’t have to manage everything yourself either. Partial self-management allows you to choose which services you want to organise and which ones you’d prefer us to manage for you.

Learn more about Support at Home Self Management here.

If you transitioned from a Home Care Package to Support at Home and still have Commonwealth unspent HCP funds, those funds can be used for eligible Assistive Technology and Home Modifications.

If you are later allocated separate AT-HM funding, your eligible Commonwealth unspent HCP funds must be used first. Once those funds have been exhausted, your allocated AT-HM funding can then be used.

If your needs have changed or your existing funds aren’t enough, we may be able to request a support plan review or reassessment for additional funding and an appropriate AT-HM funding tier.

It depends.

Most Assistive Technology items and Home Modifications attract a participant contribution similar to services in the Independence contribution category. How much you contribute depends on your individual contribution rate, if you are required to contribute.

However, required prescriptions and wraparound clinical services are treated as Clinical Supports and are fully government funded, so you don’t pay a participant contribution towards those costs.

Before anything is purchased or work begins, EnableU will work with you to understand the proposed costs, available funding and any contribution that may apply.
